Peanut is a very sick but sweet little boy. He loves to nap
on the couch and have his belly rubbed. He is a shih
tzu/poodle mix. His owner could no longer take care of
him and turned him over to the shelter. He was
diagnosed with Cushing's disease (adrenal gland
produces high levels of steroid hormone into the
bloodsteam) soon after coming into rescue-about 1 1/2
years ago. His symptoms include hair loss, vomiting,
diarrhea, muscle weakness, susceptibility to infections,
excessive thirst and lethargy.
Since coming into rescue he has required numerous vet
trips to attempt to manage this disease. He was put on
Lysodren (oral chemo agent) to help treat the
overproduction of the steroid hormone in the adrenal
gland. This medication requires frequent blood tests
(monthly to every three months) to carefully regulate the
dose. Cushing's disease cannot be cured, but the
treatments available can result in a longer, more
comfortable life for him. In addition to having Cushing's
disease, he also has severe allergies. He scratches
non-stop which has caused several skin infections which
have also been treated. His ears stay inflamed inside
due to his inability to fight infections which has required
prescription drops on several occassions. His allergies
require him to eat expensive prescription food. Please
help by sponsoring him!
