UPDATE: REPORT FROM
SPECIALISTS

Amellia was seen by the specialists this
past week. After the Dr. conducted an exam
and reviewed the x-rays, it was determined
Amellia has severe deformity of the rear
limbs. We have the option of surgical
correction. This would include cutting of all
soft tissue (muscles, tendons, and
ligaments) from the bones, cutting the
femur bone, in order to shorten it,
repositioning the leg, reconstruction of the
ligaments, and then reattaching all soft
tissue back to the bones. The femur bone
would need to be shortened because once
the soft tissue is cut from the bones and
the bone is repositioned, the soft tissue
would not be long enough to reattach to
the bone. The Dr. would use plates,
screws, and wires to permanently hold the
newly positioned bones in place. She
would need multiple surgeries in order to
complete the process. Furthermore, there
is no guarantee of the outcome of any of
the surgeries, as there are a host of
complications and risks that could
accompany the surgeries.

After much thought for Amellia’s well being,
it has been decided that we will not opt for
the surgical procedures. The risks
associated with the surgeries, not to
mention the amount of pain she would
have to endure for months, are too great
and not worth the chance of placing
Amellia in an inferior medical position.
There are too many risks and
complications that could arise from such
complicated surgeries.

An alternative to surgery is purchasing a
cart, to provide Amellia with broader
mobility. We will apply the donations
received, to pay for her medical costs and
to purchase a customized  cart for Amellia.
